Words of Wisdom from TV Dads

No matter what, Dads always seem to have great advice. We’ve found some of the best advice from our favorite TV Dads.

“Whoever said there was a silver lining for every cloud sure knew his clouds.” – Rob Petrie, The Dick Van Dyke Show

This is a great quote – and so true! There is usually a silver lining to every situation. It can be difficult to see at the time but it is important, when things go wrong, to look for the positives.

“When you write an angry letter, hold onto it for a day. You might not feel the same in the morning.” – Hal, Malcolm in the Middle

These are surprisingly wise words from one of TV’s quirkiest characters. It’s very true though, you should never decide when you’re angry. It could be a decision you regret later.

“You can’t take a step forward with both feet on the ground.” – Mike Brady, The Brady Brunch

You can’t dream big if you are too rooted in reality! Don’t be afraid to step forward, make a big move, challenge yourself. It could be the best thing you have ever done. But you’ll never know if you don’t try!

“There’s always going to be somebody who’ll try to take your dignity and self – esteem. Just never let them take your voice.” – Rev. Eric Camden, 7th Heaven

It’s important to remember that you can’t let someone take your opinion away from you. What you have to say is just as important as what anybody has to say!

“This is not Burger King. You can’t have it your way.” – Cliff Huxtable, The Cosby Show

This is a pretty funny quote, but very true! Perfectionists need to keep this in mind too, you can’t always have things exactly the way you want. Sometimes you just have to let go and embrace the alternatives!

“Time is a precious commodity – and when you’re late you not only waste your own time, but you waste the time of other people around you.” – Ozzie Nelson, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet

This can be a tricky one to follow, especially if you’re like me and find it hard to get out of bed in the morning! It’s always good to remember how precious time is for us, and everyone else. So try to get up when your alarm starts beeping!

“Girls come and go but you’ll always have your family” – Homer Simpson, The Simpsons

I’m as surprised as you are that Homer managed to say something so wise! It’s easy to get wrapped up in relationships and friendships, but remember, your family are always there for you. Always try to make an effort to spend time with your family.

“The important thing is to admit when you’re wrong and to apologise” – Philip Banks, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

This is something that my dad always tells me too, and it’s great advice. People really respect those who admit if they have been wrong and can apologise sincerely.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The

“Ten percent of your paycheck, where does it go?” – Jack Geller, Friends

This piece of advice has always stuck with me. Try and save if you can, not just for a vacation or new bag, but for your future.

“Never be afraid to reach for the stars, because even if you fall, you’ll always be wearing a Parentchute.” – Phil Dunphy, Modern Family

So the Parentchute thing is a little bizarre, but the idea is there! Your parents are one of the greatest supports you will have in your life. So even if you try, and fail, take comfort in the fact that they will be there for you always.
