General FAQs

Digital cards are digital versions of physical debit or credit cards that can be used for online and for in-store purchases. For example, adding your Mastercard digital card to the smart wallet on your phone allows you to use it in-store.

Virtual cards are digital and cannot be used physically in store. They are often generated for specific purposes, like online shopping or subscriptions.

Yes, both virtual and digital cards have expiration dates, same as physical cards. However, some virtual cards are designed for single use only and automatically expire after one transaction.

Most virtual cards can only be used online. Some digital cards are closed loop, meaning they are restricted to specific stores or retailers. Others, like Mastercards, can be used anywhere digital payments are accepted, both in-store via mobile payments like Apple Pay or Google Pay, and online.

Any business can create an account and start creating digital cards for employees. And because they're digital, Mastercards offer all the benefits of virtual cards plus you can use them in-store or online via Apple Pay or Google Pay.

No Most digital and virtual cards are not designed for ATM withdrawals

Open loop digital cards are often preferred for shopping due to their flexibility. They can be used anywhere online or in-store where mobile wallet payment is accepted.

Fees can vary depending on the issuer and the type of card. Some virtual cards may have issuance or usage fees, while digital cards might be included as part of your banking services, gifted to you from an employer, or given to you by a manager to use as a business expense card.

Digital cards are more suitable than virtual cards for recurring payments. Most virtual cards are designed for single use only.
